Peripheral Neuropathy affects over 20 million people in the United States. Diabetes is the most common cause of this disease. One of the common side effects of cholesterol lowering drugs known as "Statins" is neuropathy. Many treatments that are used every day in America have been known to cause this under-recognized, horrible condition such as: chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the mercury used in many vaccines and even nitrous oxide ("Laughing Gas").
According to the World English Dictionary neuropathy means “disease or abnormality of the nervous system” - this is not a very helpful definition. Think about neuropathy as any DAMAGE to the nervous system. For instance, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Strokes and Herniated Discs are all insults to different areas of the nervous system, all with different symptoms and manifestations.
Diabetes is a systemic disease that affects all nerves of the body from the eyes, brain and small nerves of the heart and digestive system, to the nerves in the feet, hands, and legs. The peripheral nervous system is composed of the nerves that extend out of the spinal cord to all components of the human body.
There are three main parts to a nerve cell (called a neuron): cell body, axon cells, and dendrites (nerve/muscle junction). Part of the nerve can be affected, but damage to axon cells is most customary. The axon cells transmits signals and cues from nerve cell or nerve cell to muscle. Most axons cells are surrounded by a substance referred to as myelin, which aids in signal transmission.
There are two categories of symptoms when it comes to neuropathy; "negative" and "positive". Negative signs, which usually come first, are when damage to the nervous system, obviously, brings about a LOSS or the damage of a certain function. For example; loss of strength, loss of reflexes, a loss of sensation like numbness or an inability to feel cold or hot. Because the brain makes up the difference in the losses, these changes are rarely detectable to the patient. The sick and damaged nerves do eventually develop the "positive" signs of neuropathy; tingling , burning, biting, stabbing, shooting pains, but only after some time. This, too, is a backlash of the brain and the nervous system, unfortunately this over reaction tears apart the threads of the patients’ lives.
The language of “pain” is described differently by each patient. A doctor not trained in the recognition and treatment of these patients will be easily confused. If this occurs, the patient will continue to suffer, going from doctor to doctor, to heftier and stronger doses of medication until they are either completely drugged up and completely "out of it", or lost in their own world of suffering and misery.
In some cases neuropathies come on suddenly, while other develop over many years.
Some are affected only by a weakness in the arms and legs which leads to difficulties such as standing, walking, or getting out of a chair. Additionally, the loss of sensation from the feet, ankles and toes contributes to patients not having a ‘good sense’ of where their feet are in space and this causes them to become off balance and/or fall very easily. These under-recognized sensory losses CAN ONLY be detected with a proper and detailed clinical examination. This office has the necessary systems and tools to detect the underlying cause of this ‘silent’ and debilitating nerve damage.
For some the inability to walk will become a harsh reality. For others it will start with a slight tingling sensation or a pin pricking feeling that turns into a deep sharp stabbing pain and burning electric like shock. These crippling problems can also be at their worst during the night while trying to get to sleep, because the PAIN never goes away. In fact, once this disease begins IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE!!
Currently, traditional medicine has NO known cure for Peripheral Neuropathy. The extremely powerful medications dispensed to patients DO NOT TREAT the NERVE DAMAGE! They numb the brain to numb the pain. This is not correcting the problem. A drugged existence is not easily tolerated, but patients feel they have NO OTHER OPTION against this horrifying pain.
